It's way back in the 1960's, and The Doors are at the top of the charts. Everybody knew about them, everybody loved them. There were The Beatles, The Who, The Rolling Stones, The Byrds, The Doors, Cream, The Beach Boys, Jimi Hendrix, Iron Butterfly, The Kinks, The Mamas and The Papas. Everybody Knew about them, everybody listened to their music. There were not many sub-genres, just rock, soft rock, and phycadelic mainly.
1970's. Blondie, Sex Pistols, E.L.O., Ike Turner, Iggy Pop, Genesis. Starting to see a little alternative rock, punk, along with rock.
1980's. Pink Floyd, Cars, Michael Jackson, Billy Joel, Elton John, Manhattans. Pop branches off from rock. Lots more alternative rock, but rock remained dominant.
1990's. Madonna, Third Eye Blind. Puff Daddy, Aerosmith. MC Hammer, AC/DC. Eric Clapton, R. Kelly, Nirvana. As you can see, Rap is starting to become popular as well as pop. Don't get me wrong, The 90's were one of my favorite years for rock, but it is slowly fading away.
2000's. In my opinion, rock just died right there. The rap and pop culture has now become dominant. There is no leaders in the rock genre. Not really any bands that everyone knows about and loves.
Present Day. Rap is dominant. It is horrible. What is left of rock is now turning into specific genres like Emo, Hardcore, Heavy Metal, Death Metal, Black Metal. Things are going to the extreme. It's chaotic.
Future: Rock died. Rap/Pop remains dominant. Lots of subgenres. Alternative Emo, Pop-Emo, Pop-Punk, Alternative Metal, Rap-Metal, Pop-metal, etc. It's gone. All we can do is hope that people will come to their senses and rap will die out; but I highly doubt that.
Hmm I really like certain rap, underground rappers and even starting to like some pop rap.
ReplyDeleteBut I don't think rock will die out, but rather evolve into something else. All genres are changing, and we redefine them as we go. One thing i know is this: if music never changed, it'd be boring.
